A California man used pocket knives to amputate his own leg in order to free himself after being pinned under a tree for almost 11 hours & then travelled 3km’s to get help. Eventually, Eric Bockey, a neighbour in the area, heard Hill’s cries for help.

“Only me, Al and God were there that day,” he said, declining further comment.
A few years ago I attended a book signing & got to hear the story of rock climber, Aron Ralston, who amputated his arm after it being pinned under a boulder for over 5 days. I have to say I found his story & attitude nothing short of amazing.

I find these stories fascinating mainly because of what we, as humans, are willing to do to survive. Both these peeps truely deserve to be classed as ‘amazing people of the world’

Jan Grzebski

Railway worker Jan Grzebski, 65, fell into a coma after he was hit by a train in 1988. Back then Poland was still a communist state & food was still being rationed out.

“When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol queues were everywhere, Now I see people on the streets with mobile phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin,” he told Polish television.

He credits his survival to his wife, Gertruda, who cared for him.

Dave Holland - The age

This guy got his hair caught in a large drill, & was consequently scalped. The whole article is pretty grusome so i’ll spare the details, save the ending, which is quite beautiful. To Quote…

“The day I got squashed I changed,” says Dave. “I was just a quiet Australian who went out to work one morning and got turned into a different person.

“But it made me better in some ways too. I have a psychological awareness I never had before, I perceive and care about other people’s feelings more than I ever did, I don’t let the little things bother me. I might be a victim, but I don’t want to have a victim mentality.

“On my best days I’ve come to terms with the way I look. I have no hair, no eyebrows and there’s visible scarring over my face and head. But at heart I’m a Buddhist – I understand all things change.”

And so, he says, there are many nights when he sits out in his backyard and watches the stars just to enjoy their beauty.
